Ready for the weekend – with a request from a friend who is an amateur Classical Musician.
He’s looking for some help in the digital music arena.
Richard is the proud owner of what might frankly be called acres of disk space. Not hard in the day of ultra-cheap drives with hundreds of GB each. His plan is to rip from CD directly to WAV files – no compression at all. Step 1 to the plan, going well. His problem is with the jukebox player software and the nature of the music he likes to listen to, and how he likes to listen. Step 2 – selection of player software is where he is stuck. Since most symphonic works consist of several movements, the proper way to listen is to the work in its entireity. However, from time to time he wants to listen to, let say the third movement of a particualar symphony. This means that his plan puts one movement per file. On alternate days when he’s living dangerously, he might want to shuffle complete works and individual tracks.
If you are thinking iTunes or Winamp you see the problem approaching. In shuffle mode, you will get an interesting sequence mashup of unrelated symphonic works. Or in linear mode stepping though a playlist you would not get the variety sometimes required.
My first order solution – put each symphony into its own playlist – runs aground unless there is some way of shuffling a playlist of playlists and intermixing random movements from what I guess might be called 300 years of greatest hits.
As you can see some help is needed. If you have any ideas or suggestions over the weekend – please send email comments to Slashdotreview@gmail.com . And if we get a solution, you’ll be among the first to know.

The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .
The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )
A more lengthy summary is found at WikiPedia.
Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.
