ThinkFree Office – Definate Beta in the Online Edition
–by Andrew McCaskey

Add to Google

Not much progress to report on the ThinkFree Office Online - I was particularly hopeful about the “run time” ability to embed a Power point style presentation in a portion of a blog page – but found to my dismay that at least in the Free online version Run time of the presentation meant running the entire app in another window.

I kept getting the mysterious CM002 error and the results today, at least in the online version indicate that the advertised “Beta” status is pretty accurate
. I did get into the Write package and was glad to see the Outline Mode as a choice, but ended up with some un-expected non-results.

I guess everyone has particular hot buttons, and the reason that I keep coming back to MS Word for daily writing tasks is the VIEW/OUTLINE that has been there for the past fifteen years at least. It’s a highly addictive and effective way to organize thoughts, and seems to be the one feature that routinely gets left out in implementations such as AbiWord, Writely and Open Office.

It may well be that one or both of us have not been hitting on all cylinders, so I’ll give it another try. If the Outline Feature worked, they might have a convert.

The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .

The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )

A more lengthy summary is found at WikiPedia.
Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online,
a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.

I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
