ThinkFree Office – Out of the Box
–by Andrew McCaskey

Add to Google

Welcome to Paul, MA Green, Claudio and Stu8175 who have recently joined us via the FeedBlitz service. A heads up to ultrashock1, Mr Weiner, Flowerchild and kellyVDM – it looks like there may have been some typos when you enrolled. It’s easy to do – just look for the Feedblitz box at the bottom of the page at SDR.com.

Some experimentation in spare moments today with ThinkFree Office Online – the free online edition that lets you create, edit and store documents that are ‘plug compatible’ so to speak with their counterparts in MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I noticed that the U3 USB Portable App page just announced a U3 version of ThinkFree Office and that set me off to investigate. It takes a while for the Java to load – but then it’s cached locally and the next time you log on it seems to go more quickly. I’ll have some more comments on ThinkFree Office tomorrow. The past few months I had actually been using Writely for light duty script writing from one machine to another – but understand it has been scarfed up by Google and that new accounts are on hold for the moment.

With all the options today – Open Office, Writely, ThinkFree – that provide 90% of the functionality of the full-up Office 2003 for most people for most tasks
– it’s no wonder that, at least in this part of the country that the “Student Edition” (wink, wink – nudge, nudge) of a lot of Microsoft product flies off the shelf at around $70. The upgrade – now I think called Office 12 – had better have some special sauce.

The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .

The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )

A more lengthy summary is found at WikiPedia.
Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online,
