Survey Data and TPN Roundtable
–by Andrew McCaskey
From time to time I have thanked SDR listeners who have taken the Listener survey, and I’ve tried to give fair warning that it’s a comprehensive multi-page survey. But have you every wondered why all that is necessary ? That’s the subject of part of our upcoming Techpodcast Roundtable this Saturday, March 11th at 1:30PM Pacific, 4:30PM Eastern.
We’ll be joined by Mark McCreary, President of Podtrac, Inc. Podtrac is a company that has been working for the past three months to study and characterize the SDR audience. Podcasting is maturing into a medium that is similar to but in some ways markedly different from terrestrial or satellite radio. A lot of the advertising model growing pains that we have experienced on SDR over the past year are the result of patterns and expectations that we tried to apply from radio. We’ve pulled back, made some adjustments – and will have more to come. Listener feedback and formal survey data are the way that we do that in an organized manner – so that we are not getting whipsawed by point data, but are still responsive to our listeners. Surveys relate to content and continued viability of your favorite podcasts – and Mark will give us the inside scoop.
Don’t forget to register at Techpodcasts.com . Reason being, those who pre-register will be in a preferred position for the drawings for U3 USB Thumb Drives, donated by U3, Inc. U3′s Nathan Gold will be presenting on the topic of Portable Apps – Office Suite, browser, Skype and other applications – that fit application and data onto a USB stick.
One of the TPN podcasters who will be in attendance is Sebastian Prooth, of From the Director’s Chair Podcast. I have to mention that some of the SDR ‘Behind the Scenes’ history got covered in a lengthy interview that was included, along with some good Podsafe music in his show #12 – that I’ve linked on the site. Some insider information on Tech Podcast Network, and some bits on the SDR story. This Saturday March 11, the continuing series on the Tech Podcast Roundtable. The event is at 1:30PM Pacific – 4:30 Eastern. One of our special guests will be Nathan Gold of U3 Corporation. U3 is the pioneer in modifying and qualifying applications to insure that there is no trace left on the host machine – not even a registry entry. U3 is also donating some sample units – and that’s why you’ll want to register in advance at Techpodcasts.com for a live drawing for those samples. Pre-registered attendees get, quite frankly, an unfair advantage.
Don’t forget that you can get Slashdotreview by email, with a built in flash player, arriving in your email inbox each day. Just sign up for the free FeedBlitz service on the site. Plus you can then forward that email, and introduce someone new to podcasting to SDR – without having to explain a thing.
CES CD Now Available
The official package of the entire SDR coverage for the CES Convention available in data CD form at the SDR CD Store page.
The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .
The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )
A more lengthy summary is found at WikiPedia.
Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online, a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.
I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
