Roundtable March 11th – USB Drive Presentation by U3
–by Andrew McCaskey
During a recent trip at a Holiday Inn Express, I glanced over at the PC in the lobby and wondered if I really needed to go back to the car, grab the laptop, power up and hit the free wifi. All I needed to do was check my email – and if the message that I was expecting was there, make one quick follow up phone call. Of course, that call was to Singapore.
I think that’s why I am so fascinated by a device and application that I am sure you have heard of by now – the addition of a suite of applications to a USB thumb drive that will autoboot in most Windows environments. I first saw this device at the SanDisk booth at CES. My attention was directed there as the result of a chance conversation with a senior Web 1.0 pioneer – who directed me to what he thought was one of the most significant items at CES.
Consider how you really use your computer, most of the time. How much of your routine activity – web browsing, IM, word processing, email and so forth, really requires the capabilities of even a modest set up from your local Best Buy or mail order ?
These devices enable you to carry an entire suite of applications – Open Office, Gaim, a virus checker and including Skype for that phone call packaged along with your data in a 512M or 1GB package. The cool thing is, when you unplug the thumb drive, everything: Your data, your apps, and your passwords – go with you on that drive. Leaving no trace on the hotel lobby machine.
This Saturday March 11, the continuing series on the Tech Podcast Roundtable. The event is at 1:30PM Pacific – 4:30 Eastern. One of our special guests will be Nathan Gold of U3 Corporation. U3 is the pioneer in modifying and qualifying applications to insure that there is no trace left on the host machine – not even a registry entry. U3 is also donating some sample units – and that’s why you’ll want to register in advance at Techpodcasts.com for a live drawing for those samples. Pre-registered attendees get, quite frankly, an unfair advantage.
That’s the detail on one of our special guest presenters this weekend - more information on guest speaker #2 tomorrow.

The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )
