SDR Music Voting by Listeners
–by Andrew McCaskey

Add to Google

Listeners are helping me expand my musical horizons.

The idea started early this afternoon, when a SDR Listener, Dennis Anthony of York, PA sent along an email that said in part

. . .Thanks for turning me onto GarageBand.com! Here are a few favorites that have been in my rotation, and that I have shared with others . . .

Few favorites, indeed. Dennis provided the complete cut/paste urls for 14 garageband.com artists, and the unique link to the individual songs that he thought should be in the playlist at SDR !

One thing lead to another, and the path was clear to some fun: Letting SDR listeners nominate and vote on which songs to promote to the playlist.

Here is the link to the page.

I am posting this quickly, so the links and artwork are not in place. But, being a technical audience, you will be able to find your way to the page at SDR.com, immediately cut/paste your way to sample the songs.

Keep track of the songs and groups that you really like, because there will be a voting survey link

that will allow you to vote for the artist and track that you think should be featured on SDR next week.

Within an hour of the message from Dennis, Aaron Brown suggested another band and also sent along the garageband.com url.

And, if you would like to suggest a garageband.com song, send an email with data in the format, the same format suggested by Dennis and shown on the site, and I’ll add it to the list.

Don’t forget that you can get Slashdotreview by email, with a built in flash player, arriving in your email inbox each day. Just sign up for the free FeedBlitz service on the site. Plus you can then forward that email, and introduce someone new to podcasting to SDR – without having to explain a thing.

The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .

The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )

A more lengthy summary is found at WikiPedia.
Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.

Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online,
a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.

I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
