What to Do with a Pentium II
–by Andrew McCaskey

If you are like me, you have several old PC’s around the basement workshop – too good to throw away. I ran across a very informative thread on a site called SilentPCReview.com that might be of interest to many listeners. Silent PC Review is dedicated to reviews, news and information about quiet, low noise, noise-free and/or silent computers and components. This looks like an interesting site indeed for Podcasters..

The thread is called What do I do with an old Pentium II System ?

A series of pointers that start out with replacement of the old drives with quiet ones - and then recommends two linux distros freenas or clarkconnect to turn a system as old as a 200 Mhz pentium with 64 mb of RAM into a home server for 3-5 users – and once configured are headless/keyboardless boxes just ideal for a basement shelf. The feature that I thought especially cool was automatic spindown that puts the drives into an idle state, making things even quieter.

I’ve not checked things out – a fast scan of the docs indicate it’s not a 20 minute project, and who knows what evils lurk in the the NIC cards you might find in old hardware – but it does look interesting – so I may take some time to poke around later in the week. There is also something about USB keys which I do not understand- but looks like an interesting destination for those 32Mb USB keys as well.

A quick admin note. If you have a few moments, please stop by the site at SDR and click on the Listener Survey button. I’ll give fair warning and let you know that it is thorough and complete. Those who do take the time to complete the survey can not only help out SDR, but also have an opportunity to become more involved in evaluating and critiquing other programs as well.

Don’t forget that you can get Slashdotreview by email, with a built in flash player, arriving in your email inbox each day. Just sign up for the free FeedBlitz service on the site. Plus you can then forward that email, and introduce someone new to podcasting to SDR – without having to explain a thing.

Totally unrelated, but really fun is a site found later in the day: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.

Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site, It was introduced a few days ago. The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online,
a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.

I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
