Slashdot Review and Garageband Artists CD Sales
–by Andrew McCaskey
First a note of appreciation to Daniel Rairgh for his continued underwriting support for SlashdotReview, and to Sebastian and others who sent along birthday wishes to my dad.
We enjoyed a great family celebration for my Dad’s 90th birthday this weekend, including the launch of 90 helium baloons with tags. Those who cleared the trees in the 25 knot winds are probably in Nova Scotia by now. and are now mobile, headed back to home base and the regular day job. Only fly in the ointment was the quick check run on my Dad’s machine for the contiued battle of spyware and viruses. None of the later, but the usual compliment of the former – as I imagine many SDR listeners find when they do a little maintenance on family machines.
At lunch today, some really good questions about Slashdot Review and the artists that we feature each day from garageband.com. My relationship with garageband.com artists is simple and straightforward: I figure these guys could use a break - and since they are podcast friendly, it works out well for both. There is no linkage to the artists or CD sales – if it encourages you to visit garageband.com and check out theses artists.
Code SLASH will unfortunately do you no good at garageband.com if you choose to buy a CD from one of the artists. I think that most of the artists at garageband.com are affiliated with CD Baby – which unlike the major labels provide a majority of the proceeds of an album directly to the artist. I get the satisfaction of passing it forward , in the words of the movie title from a few years ago.
I just ordered up another album and have been assured that “my order was celebrated by a ceremony as the CD was dusted for fingerprints by four monks, placed in a gun-cotten lined sarcophaus and consigned to a vagan approved transport that will speed the CD to my waiting mailbox … or somesort. I put the text of the complete message up on the site.
Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.
A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure
it was in the best possible condition before mailing.
Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money
can buy.We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party
marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of
Portland waved ‘Bon Voyage!’ to your package, on its way to you, in
our private CD Baby jet on this day, Tuesday, February 21st.
I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did.
Your picture is on our wall as ‘Customer of the Year’. We’re all
exhausted but can’t wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!
A sense of humor, good tunes, and money to the right place.
Sounds like a good combination.
Don’t forget that you can get Slashdotreview by email, with a built in flash player, arriving in your email inbox each day. Just sign up for the free FeedBlitz service on the site. Plus you can then forward that email, and introduce someone new to podcasting to SDR – without having to explain a thing.
Totally unrelated, but really fun is a site found later in the day: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.
Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site, It was introduced a few days ago. The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online, a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.
I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
