Day’s Tour: Slurp, Biometrics and Haptics Demo
–by Andrew McCaskey

You may recall the item from a few days ago that referenced the “slurping iPod” – I had a note today from a listener who was looking for a few more details from pubs like IT WEEK and Security Park on that story. He was preparing a memo to support locking down USB devices for a corporate client. Unlike the ‘A list’ bloggers, I can’t go Googlefree for a week, so a quick search of GoogleNews revealed that there’s quite an issue, driven by the data theft tool called slurp.exe which was invented as a vulnerablility demonstration – a company called Centennial Software has the antidote, Centennial’s DeviceWall, and a demo version called Slurp Audit, a version of Slurp that produces a list of unprotected documents with their filenames and paths.

It’s a good illustration of the good versus evil of the same USB stick technology that we’ve spoken of before from U3.com and PortableApps.com. I had to wonder, though, if the next round couldn’t combine with biometrics, and block all USB devices except the fingerprint ID’d devices.

Totally unrelated, but really fun is a site found later in the day: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long. Linked on Slashdotreview.

Don’t forget that you can get Slashdotreview by email, with a built in flash player, arriving in your email inbox each day. Just sign up for the free FeedBlitz service on the site. Plus you can then forward that email, and introduce someone new to podcasting to SDR – without having to explain a thing.

Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site, It was introduced a few days ago. The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online,
a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.

I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
