Disruptive Media – Newspaper Version

A note of thanks to several people today – You may remember Lonely Bob and Curtis Stinson who continue to add underwriting support to SlashdotReview.

Some of our most faithful supporters are successful podcasters in their own right. I’m thinking about Larry and Krista LaCost, who produce a regular podcast for the Daily-Journal Newspaper in Kankakee, IL. By regular, I mean they recently aired show number 76. I had a chance to meet Larry at the Podcast show last November, and he’s provided help and encouragement several times along the way since then.

Larry and Krista were interviewed on Podcast 411.com this past week, and and in addition to the kind mention of SDR, they provided some real insight into the role that podcasting can play in the community, complementing a newspaper presence that dates back 150 years.

In the interview, it’s interesting to see how they have been able to extend the service to their community and strike out on some new ground in the newspaper industry – and how they were able to convince upper management to place a bet on a podcasting experiment that’s taken off beyond expectations, on a modest budget. Add in a passion for alignment with local artists, events and issues. If you want to hear quality community podcasting done well, you won’t find better. Daily-Journal.com

This is a continuation of my distruptive media comment thread from a few weeks ago. A lot of the cheap shots regarding podcast content are directed at the ‘Wayne’s World’ variants or co-opted by “podcasts” produced on million dollar budgets by celebrities. As this ride continues, the real progress is being made on much more modest platforms, from locations that are at best, unexpected.

Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site, It was introduced a few days ago. The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online,
a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.

I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
