Better Be Better

One of the most interesting items today for me was the announcement of the Microsoft Skype-style free internet VOIP service attached to Microsoft Office Communicator, allowing calls to mobiles running the Windows Mobile software at no charge. The telling comment at the end of the item was the channel for bringing the technology to market – firmly locked in the hands of the wireless service provideers. I sincerely doubt that the carriers will rush to embrace this turn of events, even though the technology and the hardware are there.

Looks to me like the VOIP side is gaining the momentum
(compared with the wireless service providers – who are rapidly approaching saturation). I’m not sure how much of your day to day business is now done on Skype, but it’s a fair bet that if you are working from home or from an office environment – ie non mobile- that the combination of audio quality, convenience and IM presence has smoothed your routine interaction. If you work daily with others around the globe, as I do – you’ll know that a good Skype connection is almost always preferable to the public network. Not all of them are good – but worth a try, and a least on IM you can get the message through to ring up on the landline.

The Pocket PC here was purchased a few months ago, mostly with the idea of being able to run Skype from open WiFi points without the need to pull out the laptop. It works well around the house on a known WEP network and as soon as summertime comes back around, it is going to be a part of the work at and/or around home toolbox – plus a real asset on the road.

My conclusion: If you’re thinking of betting against the momentum of both Microsoft and VoIP at the same time, you may want to make sure you’ve got some insurance – or a better mousetrap. Way better . . .

Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site, It was introduced yesterday. The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online,
a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.

I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
