The Right Tool in the Mental Toolbox
–by Andrew McCaskey
Mobile this evening - so remarks will be brief – as I mentioned, co-host Annette Thomson is off for the weekend to Long Island, fortunately missing all the snow and excitement of last week.
I’ve gone back to re-read the link on Slashdot on two items – the Tivo interview and the article on Windows Vista – Ten Reasons to do the Upgrade, when it comes. And I feel that I am moving right along the path that the consumer electronics industry would like me to follow. Whoever sets the standard for Digital Home – centered on Xbox360, Playstation 3 or some TIVO variant. What’s apparent, though is that listeners younger than myself will have the upper hand making this transition.
This past weekend, I had a bit of future shock when the family pulled out a promotional DVD in the midst of another conversation and my daughter reached for the Playstation controller. My look must have given me away, “wrong tool, you need the other controller” and her laugh (without the need for the additional phrase “comma stupid”) reminded me that even though I think of them as separate functions – playing a game and playing a movie – much of the world sees little or no distinction.
Adrian Bacon, one of the TPN network members enthusistically and agnosticly moves between the Windows, Linux and Mac OSX environments seeking the right tool for the job, as his focus moves entirely to content.
I just need to expand my mental toolbox at the same rate that the best tool for the content becomes available – whichever direction that tool comes from.
Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site, It was introduced yesterday. The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online, a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.
I came across Google SMS again today- a way to pull all sorts of useful stuff from Google with the fast SMS from your cellphone.
