Tivo Adventures and Open Source Government Fun
–by Andrew McCaskey
There’s still some fun to be had around government use of open source - checking things out courtesy of a link from the RussDevblog – Online Rants of a Developer and IT Techie.
Russ features a great photo from the Washington Post of a briefing at a government facility – that would be LTG Keith Alexander head of NSA, allowing the President and taxpayers to see to see latest technology that is fighting computer crime – tax dollars at work. The mega screen plasma display behind the general ? Tuned to the Talisker Security Wizardry Portal a service that is maintained by volunteers.
There’s a great link on the history and story, which was picked up by CNN and other media outlets – just failing to mention that the wizardry was .. open source.
On Friday I mentioned some of the difficulties in the networking install for the new Series II Tivo. I was rewarded Saturday with the firmware upgrade that showed up overnight, and by Saturday morning the podcast receiver portion of the Tivo was pumping out SDR in excellent form. I’ll extend a welcome to those listening on Tivo, and recognize their credentials as at least apprentice level wizards to get the thing to work. Not only do you have to have the right combination of USB LAN adapter or wifi USB stick on the approved list, you have to be on the Tivo approved list, registered by Tivo subscriber account on the web applications page.
I was about to continue on this vein, digging a bit deeper on the Tivo site. It’s a shame when pointing a finger elsewhere I find three fingers pointing back at me . You can avoid some of the RTFM errors that I committed by reading the posted manuals for XP or Mac OSX .
More comments, tomorrow.

Hope that you will be able to have a look at the Wombat Page at the SDR site, It was introduced yesterday. The WOM Badge is a new way for bloggers to tag and display a badge of other blogs or podcasts. Ranging in size from the discrete Podcast411 to the Bumper Sticker from Libsyn, they are are kind of fun -and if you have a badge from WordofBlog.net let me know and I’ll be glad to add it.

Now a really useful guide to Fixing Windows with Knoppix has appeared online, a reprint of a chapter in the book Hacking Knoppix from Scott Granneman . You might want to plan ahead, print out the chapter and put it alongside a fresh burn of Knoppix STD when you get the call.
