Watch Out – Rotten Bits Headed Towards You
–by Andrew McCaskey

Just had a message concerning a family interested in scanning in photographs – literally thousands of them – and was reminded once again of the article a day or two ago on Slashdot- If you missed it,

“Computerworld has interviewed Kurt Gerecke, an IBM storage expert and physicist who claims burned CDs only have a two to five-year lifespan, depending on the quality of the CD.”

I’ve linked it again on the site, because I think it is a little appreciated fact outside of the IT community – and as more and more camcorders and DV cameras offer the ability to go directly to optical media, it’s one more reminder of best practices for keeping your data and family memories safe. It’s been about ten years since we moved the photographic negatives from the house to the bank safe deposit box – but I have to be honest and confess that the digital media that’s been accumulating has not been nearly so well protected. In this digital age, it might be a good use for those internal mount 100Gig Drives.

From what I saw at CES Vista is placing a lot of emphasis on the storage and retrieval of digital content – music, photos, and videos. Just make sure that as you make the move that you are keeping alert to the needs of media at the same time. To index, find and sort is great – but the bits have got to be readable. As Professor Sam Maley taught me at CU years ago, no matter how robust that error correction coding might be, it has to have something to work on.

The quick reminder – If you hear this before 1:30PM Pacific Saturday, January 28th you can still join us for the Live Event Techpodcast Roundtable . This week’s topic will be Portable Computing, Digital Imaging. and Mobile Broadband Access.

A notice about Downloadradio.org - who provides our bittorrent feed and archival copies of SDR. There are a number of programs available through DLR, and more on the way..

And finally, a request:
If you have some time this weekend, please drop by the site, add your pin to the Frappr page, and step through the Listener Survey. It is a great help in developing SDR.
