CES Digital Home and Cingular Browser Adventures
–by Andrew McCaskey

Just putting the final touches on a compilation CD of the entire week at CES - trying to index things and add some links to make it a bit more useful. Just had a chance to review the NextGen Digital Home, the final 50 minutes that was recorded a few weeks ago.

The Live Event Techpodcast Roundtable is on for this coming Saturday, January 28th at 1:30PM Pacific. You can sign up from the link on Slashdot Review or directly at Techpodcasts.com. This week’s topic will be Portable Computing, Digital Imaging. and Mobile Broadband Access.

And I am interested in mobile broadband access. I just want to try out Opera Mini -- I spent almost an hour this morning on the Cingular tech support line with a misbehaving browser in the Motorola V3 Razr phone. Cingular – and I think all of the wireless service providers – are very anxious to keep you in their Walled Garden portion of the internet through forcing use of their Media Browser- making it difficult (but not impossible) to do simple things like check your Gmail from the phone. I’ve been doing that for about a month, and it IS habit forming. The trouble began – I think hardware related – when I wanted to break out of the garden by downloading the new Opera mini browser – a real browser, as I understand it – for the Motorola Razr, but when I tried to key in mini.opera.com the unit would freeze. Or google.com . Or anything.com . Some valiant efforts to reset via SMS but finally the second tier agent said it was time to trade in the hardware. So, I’m waiting for the warranty replacement in a few days – to pull the SIM card and see if this GSM portability really works. I guess subscribers in 180 countries would say that it does.
