KnoppixSTD: To the Rescue

An interesting day today – a panic call from a friend who tried to rouse his HP ze4300 series laptop from slumber this morning and was greeted with a flash of blue, (as in BSOD) and then black. Repeated variants on safe mode of various types and then the dreaded “No Operating System Found” . I agreed to have a look, but was very careful to set expectations. Really low. He had pulled out the restore disk, but the stern warning ” This will reformat your disk and remove all data” had him in the right frame of mind.
The reason I tell you this is in hope that some listener will pass the word to the folks who put together the Knoppix STD Linux Distribution. And tell them Thank You for a great set of tools. After booting into the Fluxbox window manager of Knoppix STD, and floundering about for an hour or two, we successfully mounted his WinXP drive in the laptop, got it to recognize a Western Digital USB portable drive, and copied over several years worth of data. A little knowledge and some luck – we used about 2% of the total capability of the tools on Knoppix STD. As they say, Your Mileage May Vary – but before you take the big step of reformatting what appears to be a hopelessly damaged drive, download and burn KnoppixSTD, mount hda and regardless of your level of Linux skill, at least look around with the emelFM file manager to see what you can find. Also thanks to Greg at koah.com, whose USB View program provided the right clues at the right time.
