Portable Apps – A Train Gathering Speed
–by Andrew McCaskey
One of the most exciting products that I saw at CES was a suite of applications from U3.com which allows you to place an entire suite of applications (and data) on a USB thumb drive.
Or, as in the case of the media from Walletex- whom I interviewed at CES – that puts a thumbdrive into what they call Walletflash - a creditcard sized device, less than 3mm thick :

This train is moving, and moving fast.
The top of the del.icio.us pile today is a site called PortableApps.com
A portable app is a computer program that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any Windows computer. When your USB thumbdrive, portable hard drive, iPod or other portable device is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug, none of your personal data is left behind.
More from their site: Portable Applications on USB allow you to
# Carry your web browser with all your favorite bookmarks
# Carry your calendar with all your appointments
# Carry your email client with all your contacts and settings
# Carry your instant messenger and your buddy list
# Carry your whole office suite along with your documents and presentations
# Carry your antivirus program and other computer utilities
# Carry all your important passwords and account information securely
So once you have put your apps and data onto a USB device, you then :
* Have your favorite websites handy to recommend to a friend or colleague
* Have your presentation AND the required software ready to go for that big meeting
* Have your password with you if you want to bank online while traveling
* Have utilities handy when visiting family or friends that are having PC problems
There are portable editions of AbiWord, Filezilla, Firefox, Gaim, NVU,OpenOffice, Sunbird and Thunderbird.
How long will it be before you quit carrying your laptop and just carry your phone/browser/mp3 device and a thumb drive with your apps and data?
I suspect not long.
Other Notes:
The SIM chip transplant went smoothly. In fact twice – as I reset the SIM card back into the old phone and copied all to the card, I did not have to re-key in all the phone numbers and addresses.
