A quick note from yesterday – When I was posting the comments and show notes, I found that the iRobot Roomba discovery has an open API – in fact there is a “Hacker” section of the site.
A quick Google search on Roomba Hacks points first to a Phil Torrone (Make Magazine) article in PC Magazine, then to a user group that speaks of the Zoomba.
The Zoombaâ„¢ is a Roomba which has had its microprocessor replaced so it can be used as a platform for robotics experimentation. The Zoomba can be controlled from a single board computer, like a Parallax BASIC Stamp or Javelin Stamp, from a laptop, or from your desktop PC.
The Zoomba is connected over a serial interface and provides simple commands to control all of the motors on the Zoomba and read the state of each of the sensors. You can write simple programs to control the motion of the Zoomba, detect collisions and play sounds.
Looks like fun.

Thanks to those who continue to add to the Frappr page. Hello to Brian Beatty in far away North Aurora, IL just a hop and skip from my day job office in Schaumburg and also to the folks at Innovative Tech News, who signed up from Roswell, NM. Home of Really Innovative Tech News, since July 1947.
Recent Links and Announcements:
A new addition to the site at SDR.com , an array of MobilCast Qualified handsets. The engineers at Melodeo run handsets through the mill and qualify them for the MobilCast service. The list changes every few days, as Sony Ericsson and Nokia enhance and obsolete various model numbers. I’ll try to keep it up to date.
Thanks to Pete Murry of Laporte PA for a video clip that he posted as his photo on the Frappr page. Right next to Rob’s dignified photo. If you are a fan of the TV show NCIS, this is a DiNozo moment from the animal world. It is worth the trip to the page, watch the penguin carefully.
About a year ago I found a great WGBH Boston TV program that I have linked before about the music business called “The Way the Music Died” If you want to really understand why indy music is a part of SDR, take time to stream the program on the site.
Steve Holden, always on the alert, has forwarded a link for a snow blower that should be featured on an entire episode of Home Improvement. Binford Manufacturing would love this one: Bona Fide designed from the ground up around a big block Chevy V-8 : The manufacturer’s quote “.you¹ll never get bored with the job as the 454 cubic inch big block Chevrolet V8 produces 412 horsepower, 430 foot pounds of torque and can throw snow 50 feet at just 3500 rpm . Plus heated grips and turns on a dime. Links and a photo on the site for those interested. Still can’t figure out how a podcaster in San Diego has such in depth knowledge..
