The item on TPM, the “Trusted Platform Module” bears some further expansion. It’s from Michael Rogers at MSNBC.

“The TPM chip was created by a coalition of over one hundred hardware and software companies, led by AMD, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Microsoft and Sun. The chip permanently assigns a unique and permanent identifier to every computer before it leaves the factory and that identifier can’t subsequently be changed. It also checks the software running on the computer to make sure it hasn’t been altered to act malevolently when it connects to other machines: that it can, in short, be trusted. For now, TPM-equipped computers are primarily sold to big corporations for securing their networks, but starting next year TPMs will be installed in many consumer models as well.”

The EFF has a white paper deep link with some thoughtful comments from the WinHEC developers conference last summer, with notes that it will probably not be included in Longhorn / Vista.

Still there is something about it that makes me a bit nervous. The Wall Street Journal had an article a few days ago where they noted that “the Barbarians are Always Circling Outside the Gate”. Take TPM in hardware, eventual TPM linkage from Microsoft in Vista Service Pack 1 – when maybe two years from now — now combine with recent news of the attempts by SBC and others to implement a “Two Tiered” internet with some packets more equal than others, and the discomfort level increases even more. Something to think about when you reach for your end of the year checkbook entry for EFF.

I think it is something that bears watching.

Thanks to PG Kelly who continues his research on the Thunderbird mail client, and how to get the spam filters calmed down so that the Feedblitz email version of SDR comes thru reliably.

Frappr pins from all over: London, Vallejo, Wellington NZ, Georgia, and fellow Techpodcaster Bwana McCall of the BRaytek Podcast. Thanks to all. Plus some nice photos and cartoons showing up as well.

Hello also to listeners who are joining us on ODEO. Tried to take a look at some of the subscription lists of SDR listeners this afternoon and there seemed to be some temporay. database problem . That is one of the cool things about ODEO – I can find out what other SDR listeners find interesting. And you can too..

    Recent Links and Announcements:

A new addition to the site at SDR.com , an array of MobilCast Qualified handsets. The engineers at Melodeo run handsets through the mill and qualify them for the MobilCast service. The list changes every few days, as Sony Ericsson and Nokia enhance and obsolete various model numbers. I’ll try to keep it up to date.

Thanks to Pete Murry of Laporte PA for a video clip that he posted as his photo on the Frappr page. Right next to Rob’s dignified photo. If you are a fan of the TV show NCIS, this is a DiNozo moment from the animal world. It is worth the trip to the page, watch the penguin carefully.

About a year ago I found a great WGBH Boston TV program that I have linked before about the music business called “The Way the Music Died” If you want to really understand why indy music is a part of SDR, take time to stream the program on the site.
