It’s time, once again, to remind you that there’s a renewed need for Amateur Radio volunteers in Louisiana, while fresh volunteers are required in Texas. More than 100 Hams are still on duty at various points throughout the hurricaine area. The Amateur Radio community has continued to respond to calls for volunteers to support communication for served agencies in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. ARRL officials have expressed concern that Amateur Radio volunteers already are stretched thin supporting the recovery efforts. After recruits serve a two-week stint, the need is for fresh volunteers to replace those rotating out of the area by then. You’ll be provided meals, bring your own equipment, and a sleeping bag. Details at ARRL.ORG.
A quick note of thanks to those who continue to experiment with the famous Blue Icon at Slashdot Review, which is the bittorrent RSS feed from the site. If your podcatcher client supports bittorrent, you might want to give it a try. We have two feeds – a traditional server intensive direct MP3 feed on the regular RSS, and another one on the Blue Icon at SDR. Each night, we have two parallel delivery channels – and, if you’ve been with us for a while you know that there have been hiccups on both, though not at the same time.
One of the reasons that SDR has come to you for almost a year via bittorrent is technical, and the other has more far reaching implications. Each day, we are demonstrating a substantial non-infringing use of bittorrent for content distribution, and, with our partners at DownloadRadio.org, developing architectural refinements that improve the speed, reliability and effectiveness of bittorrent 26 out of 30 days per month. As we have so often found, providing a level of service under those conditions is not easy. Your participation, and particuarly feedback listener reports on the bittorrent feed have been a great help in that effort.
