I have to add some personal comments on the one item regarding the Voyager spacecraft, Launched in 1977. I have to express wonderment at just how far it is to the edge of the solar system, taking roughly 28 years to get there. A year or two before, Dr Sam Maley at University of Colorado, was leading a bunch of us through a classroom discussion of the coding for those transmissions. The error detection and correction coding had something like 6 or 8 data bits and maybe 56 parity bits in each frame. Yes, the thru-put sucked pondwater, but I think that we calculated that the code was robust enough that the spacecraft link could fade to nothing for ten minutes at a time and the frame would reconstruct error-free. For you non-radio types, there’s some amazing stuff going on lower in the stack that makes all this fun stuff happen upstairs. My hat’s off to the developers that figured out the foundation of all this, in the days when 19 inch racks – a lot of them – were required to house just some of the functions in your cellphone today.

Thanks to Daniel Rairgh for his continued underwriting support for Slashdot Review. Listener support is the underlying foundation of SDR – as we continue to adjust commercial content and length over all of the shows in the Techpodcast Network.

Nicole Nguyen is the membership co-ordinator of the EFF, the Electronic Frontier Foundation – just sent me a note that this is the 15th Anniversary for for EFF. If you are in the Bay Area, you can celebrate 15 years of defending freedom in the digital world in an anniversary party is on Sunday, October 2nd, at 5 p.m. at the EFF headquarters in San Francisco. The event is free of charge and open to everyone.

As we monitor hurricaine news, please don’t forget that for the remainder of the month of September, that many of the artists that we regularly feature on SDR have joined in support of the Red Cross relief efforts.
